Cave City Fire Department hands out fruit baskets to community
CAVE CITY, Ky. – If you heard sirens throughout Cave City on Saturday, no reason to be worried.
The fire department went throughout the neighborhoods, giving out fruit baskets to residents.
This is a tradition that’s been going on for many years, and residents look forward to it so much that they’ll come out of their homes and wait at the street for firemen to give them a basket.
For the fire chief, it’s about a lot more than just making people’s holidays.
“It’s a good thing for the community because there’s a lot of people that… doesn’t have a lot and some of them actually… that might be the only fruit and stuff that they get for the Christmas season and everything. So we just like to be able to do this for the community and stuff,” chief Kevin Jandt says.
Even Santa Claus himself was overwhelmed by the amount of support the Cave City residents give to the Fire Department through this holiday tradition.
“It kind of makes it hard on myself and Mrs. Claus due to the fact that they don’t get a lot. So we try to make their memories last with them seeing us. A lot of times… when we go to their houses, it’s something bad. This time we’re going out for something good… to help them and make memories with their families,” Cave City Fire Department’s Santa says.
Jandt also says the tradition of passing out fruit has been going on in Cave City long before even he started at the Department over 30 years ago.
All the firemen love going out and sharing the same love they receive from their community.
