Avoiding illness during holiday travel

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- During the holidays, you may be catching a flight or passing food to family and friends, but sometimes we don’t consider potentially passing on an illness.

We sat down with a doctor from T.J. Samson Community Hospital to discuss the risk of getting sick during the holidays.

Dr. Taylor Patrick, chief resident physician at T.J. Samson, says some sickness and common colds are around during the holidays. Sometimes you can’t help coming into contact with bacteria or viruses, and being around our loved ones does not make it easier.

Patrick discusses one possible way to try to avoid illness while you travel and see family.

“We’re really treating what we think is going to be the biggest strains each year. You know, we encourage you to get your shot every single year, because we want you to be as protected as you can be, but we never really know exactly which strains are going to be the ones that are hitting the hardest, which is why it’s so important.”

In addition, staying hydrated and washing your hands can help support your health throughout and after the holiday season, but this is just the start to remaining healthy.
